HOPE STARTS HERE STORIES

Shia

Shia came to the ranch at just nine years old, a young girl from a broken family with little understanding of God.

Her early life was far from easy. Her mother had passed away when she was only five, and shortly after, her father went to prison.

With six siblings and no stable home, her aunt and uncle decided to split the children up among relatives. This separation added to her feelings of instability and loneliness. She often went without enough food and lacked the basic comforts of a loving home.

When she arrived at Happy Horizons Children’s Ranch, everything began to change. For the first time, she felt a sense of love and belonging. The ranch provided her with a home, consistent meals, and a community that cared for her.

Despite the new environment, she struggled initially, having intense tantrums as she tried to understand her new surroundings and the changes in her life. She wrestled with allowing herself to belong, too scared to hope in case it all went away.

At the age of twelve, a pivotal moment occurred—Shia had learned about God, and she decided to let him lead her life.

This decision marked a significant transformation in her life. The ranch not only provided for her physical needs but also helped shape her character and faith. She began to thrive, becoming the best version of herself and reaching for her dreams.

Now, at twenty-two, she is one of the older girls at the ranch, pursuing a degree in early childhood education. She has been on the Dean's list both this year and in previous years, reflecting her dedication and hard work.

As an elder sister figure, she helps younger girls transition and adjust to their new home, assists them with homework, and provides a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings.

Her leadership extends to the church, where she serves as a worship leader. Despite her success in education, her true aspiration is to become a nurse. Financial constraints have led her to pursue early childhood education, which is free at the college.

Nevertheless, her dream remains to study nursing, inspired by the loss of her mother and the desire to help others in need. She hopes to achieve this dream through a Project Rescue scholarship.

In her free time, she enjoys karaoke, dance, and art and often immerses herself in books. She even finds joy in cleaning when the mood strikes. Her story is one of transformation, resilience, and hope, a testament to the impact of love and support in overcoming life's hardships.

Would you consider making a financial gift to support Project Rescue scholarships? You can give girls like Shia an opportunity to pursue a passion, a calling, and a vocation they might never have had the chance to pursue if God hadn’t made a way.
